Lotus S4 1970 modell twincam

Bilen er chassisnr 2704 og er således bygget av Lotus Racing (etter chassisnr 2953 er de bygd av Lotus Cars ltd)

Opprinnelig farge var gul og bilen ble levert fra fabrikk med 1600 crossflow. Førstegangsregistrering var imidlertid med Twincam-motoren som sitter der nå, noe som tyder på at motorbytte var utført av forhandler pga populariteten som twincammotoren fikk.

Januar 1970 Første seven levert med den etter hvert berømte twincam motoren . Kun 13 serie 3 er produsert med denne motoren, og bilen fikk fort klengenavnet super seven.

August 1973 Produksjonen overtas av Caterham Cars.

WHEN PRODUCED:
Circa March 1970 to August 1973 then by Caterham Cars.

CHASSIS NUMBER SEQUENCE:
S4/2650 to S4/331(?). Left hand drive cars had the prefix 'LBS4' or 'LS4'

NUMBERS PRODUCED:
66? plus 37 by Caterham Cars.

CHASSIS:
Mild steel tubular structure with fabricated stressed steel side panels and front section.

BODY:
Pigmented glass fibre bonded centre section bolted to chassis. Seperate front wings and front hinged bonnet.

FRONT SUSPENSION:
Pressed steel double wishbone with coil spring damper units plus anti-rollbar.

REAR SUSPENSION:
'Live' axle located by leading and trailing links, lateral location by wishbones, coil spring damper units control ride.

STANDARD ENGINES AND GEARBOXES:
1600cc. FORD 2255E overhead valve engine with crossflow head and Weber 32DFM twin choke progressive down-draught carburettor in standard tune (GT Cortina) developing 84bhp at 5,500rpm. Compression 9.0:1. Ford semi-close ratio 4-speed all synchromesh gearbox and Ford gearknob. 2.97:1, 2.01:1, 1.40:1, 1:1, Reverse 3.32:1.

1558cc. LOTUS TWIN-CAM engine with twin 40DCOE Weber carburettors in standard Special Equipment tune (115bhp) as an optional extra using the same gearbox and as above but the Lotus-Holbay version (126bhp)

REAR AXLE:
Ford 'live' rear axle with 3.77:1 ratio.

BRAKES:
Front are Girling (Triumph Spitfire) hydraulically operated 9" disc type. Rear are hydraulically operated 8 1/2" - 9" drums. Mechanical handbrake.

STEERING:
Rack and pinion, 2 3/4 turns lock to lock, collapsible column, 13" alloy spoke wheel with PVC rim.

WHEELS AND TYRES:
5 1/2" x 13" pressed steel 'bolt-on' rims with chromium plated hub-caps. 5 1/2" x 13" light alloy 'bolt-on' rims (Brand Lotus) at extra cost. All with either 165 x 13 Dunlop SP Sport or Goodyear G800 radial tyres as standard.

ELECTRICS:
12 volt negative earth battery located in the boot.  [Extract from a Lucas Catalogue]

INSTRUMENTS:
(All by Smiths.) Speedometer, Tachometer, Oil Pressure Guage, Water Temperature Guage, Ammeter and Fuel Guage.

TRIM:
Black pile carpets and black ventilated interior trim, seat squabs and back rest.

MISCELLANEOUS:
7 1/2 gallon steel fuel tank.
